Surface water groundwater interaction in water-stressed semi-arid western India: Insights from environmental isotopes

Understanding the groundwater-surface water interactions and groundwater recharge mechanism is paramount in arid semi-arid region which covers nearly 1/3rd of continental area globally depends on to sustain ecology livelihood people. One such western India. This study uses seasonal isotopic (δ18O d-excess) differences dynamics India, conjunction with composition India Summer Monsoon (ISM) understand rainfall - relationship, variation characteristics quantification by rain. Some Important results this are (1) Temporal shallow reveals that only ∼47% recharged ISM rainfall; (2) Isotopic enrichment post-monsoon season certain regions (∼25%) indicates deep static non-replenishable extracted for irrigation finds its way into shallower aquifers; (3) ∼25% (0.52 Billion Cubic Meters) available dynamic resource South Gujarat lost as submarine discharges Arabian Sea; (4) Groundwater coastal near Gulf Kachchh hypersaline waters from salt pan.
